EXPLORE is getting closer and closer to our daily lives!

You may have followed the first commercial spacewalk, or Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA), carried out during the five-day Polaris Dawn mission on 12 September 2024. As you can see here, safety is of paramount importance in any space mission, whether for lift-off, spacewalks or sample collection. And spacesuits are not the easiest clothes to wear or work with.

Teachers attending the EXPLORE Summer School found this out the hard way, by attempting to perform simple tasks fully suited up. As progress is made in making spacesuits lighter and more flexible, we’re still a long way away from being able to carry out experiments in extreme environments easily.

Even getting a cup can be difficult in a spacesuit!
